Chuck Hannaford, PhD


Dr. Chuck Hannaford is a licensed clinical psychologist and is the President of HeartLife Professional Soul Care. He has been counseling individuals, couples, and families for over three decades. He earned his doctorate from The University of North Texas and served his internship in clinical psychology at The University of Tennessee, Medical School, Division of Psychiatry, and Department of Clinical Psychology.

After completion of his internship year, Dr. Hannaford co-founded Germantown Psychological Associates, P. C. He has served as clinical director of adolescent and adult treatment programs at various hospitals and outpatient settings. In the past, he served as the president and chief executive officer of Germantown Psychological Associates, P. C., director of professional relations for the Rapha Christ Centered Treatment Program in Memphis, consultant to various churches and executive director for Christian Wellness Concepts.

Dr. Hannaford has published articles in professional journals on the relationship between physical and spiritual well-being and emotional health. He co-authored HealthWay, a strategic discipleship intervention for physical, emotional, and spiritual health. He has been a guest on nationally syndicated radio shows as well as local TV programs discussing counseling and the family.

In addition to his current practice, Dr. Hannaford has been a consultant to faith organizations and pastors throughout the country. He has been a Professor at Southern Seminary and Southeastern Seminary training counseling students and teaching classes on ethics and therapeutic interventions. Dr. Hannaford completed a book entitled, Picking Up the Pieces Handbook: Creating a Dynamic Soul Care Ministry released in January of 2009.

Brenda Gilman, LPC, MHSP, CST

Brenda’s life verse:
The Lord hears his people when they call to him for help. He rescues them from all their troubles. The Lord is close to the brokenhearted; he rescues those whose spirits are crushed. The righteous person faces many troubles, but the Lord comes to the rescue each time. – Psalm 34:17-19

Brenda Gilman is a licensed professional counselor and certified mental health service provider. She earned a Bachelor of Arts in psychology from the University of Memphis and graduated Summa Cum Laude. She then continued at the University of Memphis for graduate studies and earned a Master of Science in the area of community agency counseling. She completed both her practicum and internship in the counseling ministry of Germantown Baptist Church.

Brenda was a member of the counseling staff at Germantown Baptist Church for three years before joining HeartLife Professional Soul Care. She is a Certified Sex Therapist through the American Board of Christian Sex Therapists. She completed this part of her education through Richmont Graduate University and the Institute of Sexual Wholeness. Brenda is EMDR trained and certified (Eye-Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) and can provide this treatment for those that suffer with PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder) as well as other mental health and life issues. Her specializations include marriage counseling, affair recovery, sex therapy, sexual addiction recovery, trauma and abuse, pre-marital counseling, depression, anxiety and other mental health issues for women, couples and families.

Brenda’s desire is to see people that are in desperate need of healing experience the truth and love of Jesus Christ. She believes that through brokenness and pain, we experience the healing touch of God and bring glory to His name. Brenda advocates that HeartLife Professional Soul Care is a counseling ministry committed to doing just that. She believes it’s a distinctly different approach to counseling designed to heal the souls of our brothers and sisters in Christ so they can live the abundant life God desires.

Ted Mattis, LMFT, MDiv

Ted’s life verse is:
I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. – Galatians 2:20

Ted Mattis is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and an Ordained Minister. For the past 23 years Ted has worked with individuals, couples and families within the clinical context and ministry context as a pastor. He has extensive experience working with couples in crisis, treating addiction and addictive systems, as well as working with people struggling with depression, anxiety and anger issues. He graduated from Georgia State University with Bachelor’s degrees in Psychology and Mental Health. He earned his Master’s Degree in Marriage & Family Therapy from Reformed Theological Seminary in 1997 and his Master of Divinity in 1999.

His passion is to facilitate restoration and redemption of broken family systems and help couples, families and individuals heal and grow within themselves, their relationships with others and in their relationship with Christ. In the past, after serving as a Marriage and Family pastor at several large congregations around the southeast, Ted held the position of Director of Lifetime Covenant Ministries, working in partnership with local churches and national ministries like Family Life to bring marital resources to the Memphis and Mid-South Community, the West TN rep for TNPAP for impaired medical professionals, TLAP, West TN rep for impaired legal professionals as well as establishing his own private practice before joining the HeartLife staff.

His counseling specialties are depression, anxiety and other mood disorders, addiction (substance & sexual) and addictive family systems, preventative and pre-marital preparation, marital enrichment, redeeming marital dysfunction, family systems, and working with young adults.

Ted has been married for 28 years and is the father of four children.

Kim Scheidegger, MA, LPC, MHSP

Kim’s life verse:
The LORD is my light and my salvation—whom shall I fear? The LORD is the stronghold of my life — of whom shall I be afraid? – Psalm 27:1

Kim is a licensed professional counselor and a mental health service provider who earned a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology at Baylor University in Waco, TX. After a year spent working full time at a Christian camp in East Texas, Kim then earned her Master’s degree in Biblical Counseling from Dallas Theological Seminary. While at DTS, Kim worked at Watermark Community Church in Dallas, TX where she led a teen girls recovery group and at City House in Plano, TX counseling kids, teens, and their families in crisis situations.

Since completing her education, Kim has worked in a variety of settings. Upon graduation Kim worked at Watermark in the pastoral care department working alongside various recovery ministries of the church. Kim was able to grow her clinical skills in helping others through a biblical framework in this setting. Kim has also worked at Youth Villages in Memphis as a residential counselor for children and teens where she was able to conduct individual, family, and group therapy sessions on a weekly basis.

Kim has experience specifically in the areas of parental divorce, co-parenting, behavioral issues/anger, body image, eating disorders, self-harm, life transitions, loss, anxiety, and depression. Kim has a cognitive behavioral orientation in her therapy while using a biblical framework and approach; giving practical solutions as well as looking at the deeper struggles that exist. She also believes that every person who comes for counseling is an individual, and she strives to understand individual needs by utilizing an array of art and play therapies when appropriate; including sand tray therapy. Kim is passionate about the mission to help people through life’s difficulties and challenges by embracing the One that can heal. Kim also believes in the power of the local church and the importance of true Biblical community.

Kim enjoys spending time with her husband and sons enjoying the beauty of God’s creation; hiking, kayaking, playing, and running. Kim finds joy in being creative though cooking and art. Kim is also passionate about building into the relationships with those in her community; believing that none of us were meant to do life alone.

Chad Hannaford, MS

Chad’s life verse:
Grace and peace be yours in abundance through the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord. – 2 Peter 1:2

Chad graduated from Mississippi College in 2007 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Psychology. After graduation he was employed at Lakeside Behavioral Health System where he worked directly with an adult population seeking treatment for issues such as depression, anxiety, and substance abuse. After leaving Lakeside Chad worked as a Transitional Living Specialist at Youth Villages, assisting individuals exiting the foster care system as they sought employment and post-secondary education.

In May of 2015 Chad graduated from The University of Memphis with a Master of Science Degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling. He completed his practicum and internship at Parkwood Behavioral Health System. He worked with adolescents seeking treatment for substance abuse and conduct disorders in both a short term and residential setting. Chad additionally worked with adults seeking treatment for a variety of mental health issues in Parkwood’s intensive outpatient program.

Chad is married to his wife Lauren and they have one son.

Cammie Walters-Carlson, MA

Cammie’s life verse:
“But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the surpassing greatness of the power may be of God and not from ourselves.” – 2 Corinthians 4:7

Cammie graduated with her Master’s in Clinical Mental Health Counseling in May of 2014 from Denver Seminary in Denver, CO. It was in Colorado that Cammie first discovered her passion for caring for God’s people through counseling while studying at the Focus on the Family Institute.

Throughout her career as a counselor, Cammie has worked as a counselor for children and adolescents in the private school system as well as working as a counselor for female clients of all ages. She is most passionate about counseling through issues involving identity formation, anxiety, depression, loss, adjustment issues, divorce, grief, health difficulties, trauma, self-image, life direction, career changes, and relationships. She believes firmly that seasons of hardship are God’s tool which He uses to make us more like Himself and to reveal Himself to us in ways that we would not otherwise come to intimately know.

In the recent years, Cammie has been involved with working at a holistic health clinic where she gained experience learning about how physical, social, spiritual, emotional, and relational issues all impact a person in profoundly interconnected ways.

At HeartLife, Cammie has been involved in several ventures counseling individuals, leading groups, and assisting Lori Church in conducting and interpreting psychological assessments. She also works adjunctly at an inner-city school providing trauma informed care to students, teachers, and families.

Nateela McGhee, M.S.

Nateela’s Life Verse:
No one has ever seen God; if we love one another; God abides in us and his love is perfected in us. By this we know that we abide in him and he in us, because he has given us of his spirit. – 1 John 4:12-13

Biography: Nateela graduated with her Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology from the University of Tennessee at Martin. During this time, she completed two internships at Youth Villages where she taught life skills, coping skills, and supported the individual growth of at-risk youth in an inpatient residential facility.

She received her Master’s Degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Freed-Hardeman University in Henderson, Tennessee. She completed her practicum and internship at The Summits of HealthQuest in Cordova, TN where she worked with adults and adolescents addressing issues such as depression, anxiety, illness management, co-dependency, grief, self-esteem, anger management, conflict resolution, emotion regulation, and stress management. Nateela utilizes an eclectic approach to therapy to reinforce client strengths and bolster areas of improvement.

She is committed to tailoring the counseling experience to each individual’s unique needs. By incorporating therapeutic activities, creative resources, and thoughtful discussions, she works to help clients utilize new skills and gain self-awareness. She firmly believes in the power of acceptance, respect, and authenticity in creating a meaningful therapeutic alliance. She is passionate about working with individuals through current struggles as these are the times that God provides His children for continued personal growth and clarity.

Lori Church, M.Ed., Ed.S.

Lori’s life verse:
But now, this is what the Lord says — He who created you, Jacob, He who formed you Israel: “Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have summoned you by name; you are mine. When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze. For I am the Lord your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior.” – Isaiah 43:1-3

Lori earned a Master’s and Specialist’s degree in education from The University of Florida, with a primary emphasis in school psychology.  Lori was a Lady Gator volleyball player (one year) and earned a scholarship to play softball (four years) for the Lady Gators. Her graduate school coursework emphases included a broad range of assessment and special education classes.   Lori’s early career included serving as a school psychologist in large public school systems in three different states.    After her public school work, Lori spent twenty years in private practice assessment.  In that role, she worked primarily with private school students in Greensboro/High Point, NC but also provided contract testing to the public school system.  She earned a reputation as a thorough and knowledgeable professional whose reports provide educational intervention recommendations that are practical in the classroom, yet uniquely tailored to the student.

Lori and her husband Glenn relocated to the Memphis area in 2011.  They have an adult son, Chris, who lives in Denver, Colorado.  They have found their church home at Fellowship Memphis, where Lori serves on the Financial Peace finance team, the hospitality team, and has co-led women’s study/discussion groups.  In her spare time, she continues her love of sports by playing competitive tennis, as well as officiating tennis.  Lori joined the HeartLife staff in October, 2014.  She is thrilled to offer psycho-educational assessment services within the context of a loving Christian counseling practice.

Laura Hannaford

Office Administrator

Laura’s life verse:
Sow with a view to righteousness, reap in accordance with kindness; break up your fallow ground, for now is the time to seek the Lord until He comes to rain righteousness on you. – Hosea 10:12

Laura worked for a major airline company prior to marrying Chuck Hannaford. After her first child she decided to devote herself full time to raising their son.

In November of 1999, Laura became Chuck’s full-time office manager. In November of 2007, she took on the added responsibility of Administrator for HeartLife Professional Soul Care.

Lauren Markwell

Practice Manager

Lauren’s life verse:

Lauren earned a Bachelor’s in Psychology from the University of Central Arkansas. After spending a few years as a professional organizer, she decided to use her organizing skills in an office environment as an office manager. She started working at HeartLife in May 2017. She is involved with her church and enjoys spending time with her family and friends. She enjoys using her creativity to design and decorate as well as restore furniture.
