Chuck Hannaford, PhD

President

Dr. Chuck Hannaford is a licensed clinical psychologist and is the Founder and President of HeartLife Professional Soul Care.  He earned his doctorate from The University of North Texas and served his internship in clinical psychology at The University of Tennessee, Medical School, Division of Psychiatry, and Department of Clinical Psychology.

After completion of his internship year, Dr. Hannaford co-founded Germantown Psychological Associates, P. C.  He has served as clinical director of adolescent and adult treatment programs at various hospitals and outpatient settings.  He served as the president and chief executive officer of Germantown Psychological Associates, P. C., director of professional relations for the Rapha Christ Centered Treatment Program in Memphis, consultant to various churches and denominational entities.

Dr. Hannaford has published articles in professional journals on the relationship between physical and emotional health.  He has been a guest on nationally syndicated radio and television programs.

Dr. Hannaford has been a consultant to faith organizations and pastors throughout the country.  He has been a Professor at Southern Seminary and Southeastern Seminary training counseling students and teaching classes on ethics and therapeutic interventions.  Dr. Hannaford completed a book entitled, Picking Up the Pieces Handbook: Creating a Dynamic Soul Care Ministry released in January of 2009.

Brenda Gilman, LPC, MHSP, CST

Brenda’s life verse:
The Lord hears his people when they call to him for help. He rescues them from all their troubles. The Lord is close to the brokenhearted; he rescues those whose spirits are crushed. The righteous person faces many troubles, but the Lord comes to the rescue each time. – Psalm 34:17-19

Brenda Gilman is a licensed professional counselor and certified mental health service provider. She earned a Bachelor of Arts in psychology from the University of Memphis and graduated Summa Cum Laude. She then continued at the University of Memphis for graduate studies and earned a Master of Science in the area of community agency counseling. She completed both her practicum and internship in the counseling ministry of Germantown Baptist Church.

Brenda was a member of the counseling staff at Germantown Baptist Church for three years before joining HeartLife Professional Soul Care. She is a Certified Sex Therapist through the American Board of Christian Sex Therapists. She completed this part of her education through Richmont Graduate University and the Institute of Sexual Wholeness. Brenda is EMDR trained and certified (Eye-Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) and can provide this treatment for those that suffer with PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder) as well as other mental health and life issues. Her specializations include marriage counseling, affair recovery, sex therapy, sexual addiction recovery, trauma and abuse, pre-marital counseling, depression, anxiety and other mental health issues for women, couples and families.

Brenda’s desire is to see people that are in desperate need of healing experience the truth and love of Jesus Christ. She believes that through brokenness and pain, we experience the healing touch of God and bring glory to His name. Brenda advocates that HeartLife Professional Soul Care is a counseling ministry committed to doing just that. She believes it’s a distinctly different approach to counseling designed to heal the souls of our brothers and sisters in Christ so they can live the abundant life God desires.

Ted Mattis, LMFT, MDiv

Ted’s life verse is:
I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. – Galatians 2:20

Ted Mattis is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and an Ordained Minister. For the past 26 years Ted has worked with individuals, couples and families within the clinical context and in the ministry context as a pastor. He has extensive experience working with couples in crisis, treating addiction and addictive systems, as well as working with people struggling with depression, anxiety and anger issues. He graduated from Georgia State University with Bachelor’s degrees in Psychology and Mental Health. He earned his Master’s Degree in Marriage & Family Therapy from Reformed Theological Seminary in 1997 and his Master of Divinity in 1999.

His passion is to facilitate restoration and redemption of broken family systems and help couples, families and individuals heal and grow within themselves, their relationships with others and in their relationship with God, in Christ.   In the past, after serving as a Marriage and Family pastor at several large congregations around the southeast, Ted held the position of Director of Lifetime Covenant Ministries, working in partnership with local churches and national ministries like Family Life to bring marital resources to the Memphis and Mid-South Community, the West TN rep for TNPAP for impaired medical professionals, TLAP, West TN rep for impaired legal professionals as well as establishing his own private practice before joining the HeartLife staff.

Ted works closely with individuals struggling with alcoholism and addiction as well as addicted family systems.  His counseling specialties are depression, anxiety and other mood disorders, addiction (substance & sexual) and addictive family systems, preventative and pre-marital preparation, marital enrichment, redeeming marital dysfunction, family systems, and working with young adults.  He is also a certified SYMBIS facilitator for pre-marital and marital enrichment. 

Ted has been married for 30 years and is the father of four children (and a soon to be granddaughter!), is a long-time friend of Bill W., loves playing music, golf, woodworking, his dog, Jack and backpacking into the wilderness.

Kim Scheidegger, LPC, MHSP-S

Kim’s life verse:
The LORD is my light and my salvation—whom shall I fear? The LORD is the stronghold of my life — of whom shall I be afraid? – Psalm 27:1

Kim is a licensed professional counselor and a mental health service provider  with her supervisor’s license. She earned a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology at Baylor University in Waco, TX. After a year spent working full time at a Christian camp in East Texas, Kim then earned her Master’s degree in Biblical Counseling from Dallas Theological Seminary. While at DTS, Kim worked at Watermark Community Church in Dallas, TX where she led a teen girls recovery group and at City House in Plano, TX counseling kids, teens, and their families in crisis situations.

Since completing her education, Kim has worked in a variety of settings. Upon graduation Kim worked at Watermark in the pastoral care department working alongside various recovery ministries of the church. Kim was able to grow her clinical skills in helping others through a biblical framework in this setting. Kim has also worked at Youth Villages in Memphis as a residential counselor for children and teens where she was able to conduct individual, family, and group therapy sessions on a weekly basis.

Kim has been at Heartlife for over 8 years and is has experience specifically in the areas of trauma, OCD, parental divorce, co-parenting, behavioral issues/anger, body image, eating disorders, self-harm, life transitions, loss, anxiety, and depression. Kim has a cognitive behavioral orientation in her therapy while using a biblical framework and approach; giving practical solutions as well as looking at the deeper struggles that exist. She also believes that every person who comes for counseling is an individual, and she strives to understand individual needs by utilizing an array of art and play therapies when appropriate; including sand tray therapy. Kim is passionate about the mission to help people through life’s difficulties and challenges by embracing the One that can heal. Kim also believes in the power of the local church and the importance of true Biblical community.

Kim enjoys spending time with her husband and 3 sons enjoying the beauty of God’s creation; hiking, kayaking, playing, and running. Kim finds joy in being creative though cooking and art. Kim is also passionate about building into the relationships with those in her community; believing that none of us were meant to do life alone.

Chad Hannaford, LPC-MHSP

Chad’s life verse:
Grace and peace be yours in abundance through the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord. – 2 Peter 1:2

Chad graduated from Mississippi College in 2007 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Psychology. After graduation he was employed at Lakeside Behavioral Health System where he worked directly with an adult population seeking treatment for issues such as depression, anxiety, and substance abuse. After leaving Lakeside Chad worked as a Transitional Living Specialist at Youth Villages, assisting individuals exiting the foster care system as they sought employment and post-secondary education.

In May of 2015 Chad graduated from The University of Memphis with a Master of Science Degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling. He completed his practicum and internship at Parkwood Behavioral Health System. He worked with adolescents seeking treatment for substance abuse and conduct disorders in both a short term and residential setting. Chad additionally worked with adults seeking treatment for a variety of mental health issues in Parkwood’s intensive outpatient program.

Chad is married to his wife Lauren and they have one son.

Cammie Walters-Carlson, LPC-MHSP

Cammie’s life verse:
“But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the surpassing greatness of the power may be of God and not from ourselves.” – 2 Corinthians 4:7

Cammie graduated with her Master’s in Clinical Mental Health Counseling in May of 2014 from Denver Seminary in Denver, CO. It was in Colorado that Cammie first discovered her passion for caring for God’s people through counseling while studying at the Focus on the Family Institute.

Throughout her career as a counselor, Cammie has been passionate about helping individuals of all ages overcome anxiety and depression, heal from past traumas, process their own griefs, and develop into the healthy and whole people that God designed them to be. She has worked with individuals age 5 through 75. She is most passionate about counseling through issues involving identity formation, anxiety, depression, loss, adjustment issues, divorce, grief, health difficulties, trauma, self-image, life direction, career changes, and relationships. She believes firmly that seasons of hardship are God’s tool which He uses to make us more like Himself and to reveal Himself to us in ways that we would not otherwise come to intimately know.

In the recent years, Cammie has been involved with working at a holistic health clinic where she gained experience learning about how physical, social, spiritual, emotional, and relational issues all impact a person in profoundly interconnected ways. One of her greatest joys in counseling is helping individuals figure out how they can heal in a holistic way that incorporates both their body, mind and spirit. 

At HeartLife, Cammie has been involved in several ventures counseling individuals, leading groups, speaking about various mental health topics, assisting in interpreting psychological assessments and working adjunctly at an inner-city school providing trauma informed care to students, teachers, and families.

Laura Hannaford

Office Administrator

Laura’s life verse:
Sow with a view to righteousness, reap in accordance with kindness; break up your fallow ground, for now is the time to seek the Lord until He comes to rain righteousness on you. – Hosea 10:12

Laura worked for a major airline company prior to marrying Chuck Hannaford. After her first child she decided to devote herself full time to raising their son.

In November of 1999, Laura became Chuck’s full-time office manager. In November of 2007, she took on the added responsibility of Administrator for HeartLife Professional Soul Care.

Lauren Markwell

Practice Manager

Lauren’s life verse:
“I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.” – John 16:33

Lauren earned a Bachelor’s in Psychology from the University of Central Arkansas. After spending a few years as a professional organizer, she decided to use her organizing skills in an office environment as an office manager. She started working at HeartLife in May 2017. She is involved with her church and enjoys spending time with her family and friends. She enjoys using her creativity to design and decorate as well as restore furniture.

Grace Copeland, MAC

Grace’s Life Verse: “But this I call to mind, and therefore I have hope: The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.” Lamentations 3:21-23

Grace Copeland graduated with her Masters of Arts in Counseling from Covenant Theological Seminary in St. Louis Missouri. After completing both a practicum and an internship at New Hope Counseling Services, she was hired by New Hope to continue to care for her clients before moving back to her hometown, Memphis.

Grace deeply values seeing the individual value of each person she has the privilege of sitting with. Grace believes that relationships are the vehicles to change- relationships with others, self and ultimately God. She thinks it is an honor to be able to encourage, advise and walk alongside individuals and families as they do the hard work of change. Because Grace believes that change happens in relationships, she seeks to make each person feel seen, known and to create an environment where all feel safe.

Grace works primarily with children and adolescents who are struggling with things like anxiety, depression, grief, behavior issues, social skills and life transitions. Grace’s therapeutic approach is full of empathy and practical solutions. Although she leans towards a cognitive-behavioral orientation, Grace tailors her approach based on the needs of the client. She seeks to use creative forms of therapy, bringing art, games and movement whenever it is helpful.

Grace enjoys spending time with her husband and daughter by taking walks with her dog, going on outdoor adventures and trying new food. Grace is passionate about living in community with others and dedicates her time to fostering an inviting home where people feel loved and cared for.

Kameron Lovelace

Kameron’s life verse: “The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that hey may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.” John 10:10

Kameron graduated with his Master’s of Science from the University of Memphis with a degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling. Kameron has worked with teenage youth and families at Youth Villages, Agape Family Services, & Health Connect America, and college adults at the University of Memphis Counseling Center and Rhodes College.

Kameron has developed an Heartlife’s career program to help students and adults find a fulfilling career. The program helps clients discover who they were designed to be, how to use their skillset in their careers, and how to build the desired lifestyle away from their job. All in just 8 sessions.

Kameron is passionate about bringing a holistic approach to therapy and helping others reach their career & life goals. As a career counselor Kameron focuses helping each client identify their strengths and weaknesses in order to match the client with a career that they are truly satisfied in.

Kameron also works adjunctly at an inner-city non-profit providing trauma informed care to students, staff, and families.
