Light Wins

Yesterday, I looked up in the sky with my special glasses watching the solar eclipse, which would cause 99 percent coverage where I was in Germantown, TN. I must admit when I first put them on, I was confused because I could not see a THING! Finally, when I tipped my head up, I could see the sun becoming covered. As I watched footage from places that got 100 percent coverage, I was struck at the BIG DIFFERENCE between 99 and 100 percent. With just 1 percent of the sun exposed, darkness was averted. It was noticeably darker like it is at dusk, but it was never total darkness.

In this moment, I marveled that the image I was seeing with my eyes held a much deeper meaning. No matter how much of our lives become shrouded in darkness, such as betrayal, loss, lack, abandonment, pain, and fear, if we know the Lord we will never ever be completely covered. Just one tiny shred of light can always own the darkness.

John 1:5 says, “The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” Even if you have lost all your light or you watch helplessly as someone you love seems to lose his or hers, it is so reassuring to know God won’t lose His.

Daniel 2:2 says, “He reveals deep and hidden things; He knows what is in the darkness, and the light dwells with Him.” God doesn’t fear the dark because He knows His light can’t be overtaken. I know in this season of life I treasure this promise!

My mom used to sing a song to me that went, “Our Heavenly Father sees in the dark, just as well as He sees in the day. Remember, He’s watching over you, and that will scare all the shadows away.” I don’t know that the shadows are gone, but I do know if the shadows are there, then that means light is there.

No matter how scary or hard life is, we must choose to look to the heavens. In fact, the scarier or harder life is, the more we must fight to lift our gaze. ”I lift up my eyes to the mountains — where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of Heaven and earth.“ Psalms‬ ‭121‬:‭1‬-‭2‬ . It’s not easy but sometimes we must remember that Light wins.
