What is adjustment disorder?

By Kelsey Byrn, LPC-MHSP Temp

Adjustment disorder is a psychological condition that occurs when an individual has difficulty coping with a major life stressor or change. According to The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, fifth edition, the primary characteristics are both emotional and behavioral and typically develop within three months of the stressor onset. These symptoms may present as anxiety, depression, irritability, and disturbances in sleep and appetite.

Adjustment disorder can commonly arise after a significant life event such as the loss of a loved one, a change in employment or living situation, or a traumatic event. It is usually a time-limited condition and resolves once the stressor has been addressed, but in some cases, it can progress to other mental health disorders. Treatment may involve therapy, medication, or a combination of both, depending on the severity of the symptoms (Mayo Clinic, 2021).

In this fallen world, we are susceptible to the various difficulties and challenges of life, however, we are not alone in it. In Scripture, we see countless examples of people who faced significant trials and challenges, but ultimately found hope and healing through Christ. Therefore, while adjustment disorder may be a tough experience, it can also be an opportunity for growth and transformation through reliance on God. While change will be constant and we will continue facing unexpected challenges, we can rest in the fact that our God never changes and is “gracious and merciful, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love. The Lord is good to all, and his mercy is over all that he has made” (Psalm 145:8–9).

Those struggling with adjustment disorder often feel isolated and alone. Seeking support from family, friends, a pastor or a therapist may help individuals cope with their symptoms. Talking with someone may help lessen the burden of the stress and provide a healthy means of emotional release. Peer support groups, whether online or in person, may also be helpful.

Verses for Encouragement:

John 16:33

"I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.”

Ecclesiastes 3:1-8

"For everything there is a season, and a time for every purpose under Heaven: a time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted; a time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up; a time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance; a time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together; a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing; a time to seek, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to cast away; a time to rend, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak; a time to love, and a time to hate; a time for war, and a time for peace."
